The Chapter House of St Augustine's Abbey, built c1120 by Abbot Hugh Flory, fell into disrepair c1325. No remains of this date were found during excavations in 1902. A new chapter house, built 1382-6, was examined during the excavations. It an oblong chamber c86ft x 36ft, the walls of which remain to a height 4ft x 5ft. (1) Chapter House, originally of 12th century date, refashioned or refaced after 1382, although main walls of the earlier building seem to have survived. (2) List of excavations. (3) Chapter House, first built c1100, rebuilt 1324-32. Eight Abbots buried within. It was excavated and subsequently covered with soil for a playing field. (4)
