CAMPANILE MOUNT

DESCRIPTION + /

Mound within Canterbury Cathedral Precincts on which a free-standing bell tower was constructed circa 1160. In 1382 this sustained serious damage during an earthquake. The tower was repaired 1383-84. It appears to have been in use until circa 1540 when Leland writes that it is "now a late clene pulled down". In 1972 the slopes of the mound were noted to be strewn with rubble.
