Summary : Site of a royal residence extant between 1194-1278.
More information : A hall and houses built at Portsmouth by Richard I. In 1278 the King's house was in such bad repair that it threatened to collapse.(a) The position of this building may be marked by the name Kingshall Green, which was given to the site of the former Clarence Barracks in Penny Street (b). (1)

(Area centred SZ635994) No additional information. Sited to that part of Clarence Barracks which lies within the former extent of the Town Walls. (2)

Richard had the buildings protected by a ditch. Henry III had the buildings repaired from time to time and built a chamber and chapel for the Queen. (3)
