More information : (SZ 50118855) A 3rd c Roman Villa of winged-corridor type overlying a 1st/2nd c. habitation site, was excavated by P.G. Stone in 1926, in Avondale Rd, Newport. Coins of Hadrian, Antoninus Pius, Postumus, Tetricus, Claudius Gothicus and Helena were found. (1)
The more important part of the villa is protected by modern buildings. (2)
It seems likely that the villa was deliberately part demolished and later used by a blacksmith. (3)
Now under the care of the I.O.W. County Council. The principal rooms are covered by a building containing a few finds, and is open to the public. The external walling has been raised to c.2ft with building debris. The remains of the walling outside the covering building have been included on 1/1250 survey. (4)
Traces of a perimeter wall have been picked up and there may be other remains connected with the villa still to be located. (5)
1445 Roman Villa (Avondale Road) SZ 5088 NW 7/316
(Administered by Isle of Wight County Council) Roman Villa, discovered in 1926. Corridor type, major part roofed over and containing well preserved bath-suite. The steam bath has its original flooring and some of the box flues are still in position. The hypocaust as a whole is in good condition. A number of rooms retain pavements of geometric design. A fireplace survives as does part of its plaster hood. A number of stone roofing tiles have been recovered. The existing walls are of local stone. Grade 1. (6)
