More information : [Four sites published 'A', 'B', 'C' and 'D'.] [Group centred SZ40628472] Tumuli [O.E.] Harboro' [O.E.] Human remains found AD 1856 [T.I.] [Apparently applying to barrow 'A']. (1) 'A' [SZ 40538477] Opened from E, much disturbed.(2) 23 paces in diameter and 6 feet high. Mound badly damaged. (3) Workmen, digging at the side of the barrow for gravel, found human skeletons laid side by side, almost in a circle. Other skeletons were uncovered in 1850. (4) [? Saxon secondary burials] 'B' [SZ 40628472.] Opened from the top, much disturbed by rabbits. (2) 27 paces in diameter, 6 1/2 feet high. Ditched. Top levelled as if for a beacon. The name Harboro' seems to be attached to this barrow. (3) At Hauedburghe, a beacon is mentioned in 1324 (5) and 1638 (6) Beacon Symbol (7). 'C' [SZ 40698472] Opened from the top, much disturbed by rabbits. (2) 23 paces in diameter, 4 feet high. (3) 'D' [SZ 40718472] Opened from the top, much disturbed by rabbits. (3) 24 paces in diameter, 7 1/2 feet high. Very fine ditched example. (3) 'E' [SZ 40608464] 12 paces in diameter, 2 feet high. Small hollow in centre. (2-7) 'A' Remains of a bowl barrow, badly mutilated on NE, SW and SE by gravel digging, diameter averaged 21.0m, maximum height of 1.8m. 'B' Steep-sided bowl barrow, 25.0 m. in diameter, 2.2. high, with a ditch 3.0m wide, 0.2m. deep on the w side. The flattened top is encircled by a small bank and is occupied by the foundations of a small war-time building. The foundations of a second building are cut into the base on the SE side. This barrow is an excellent beacon site, commanding a wide view of the English Channel and would have been intervisible with a large number of island and mainland beacon sites. (See Beacon type-site, SZ ). 'C' Bowl Barrow, 18.0m in diameter, 1.4m high, no traces of a ditch. Hollow at the centre. 'D' large bowl barrow, 22.0m in in diameter, 2.9m high, surrounded by a ditch, 3.0m wide, 0.3m. deep. Large hollow at centre, and dug into on SE side. 'E' A 6.0m diameter patch of flints at SZ 40568462 marks the site of this barrow. Resurveyed at 1/2500. (8) 'F' SZ 40608477. ? Round barrow 12m. diameter, 0.5m. high, not shown by OS.
