More information : The remains of an iron forge, surrounded by heaps of scoriae recorded 1836 and some still visible circa 1883 at Plumpton Clough, in the parish of Royton. Their Roman origin is hardly doubtful. (1) There are now no visible indications of the forge. Plumpton Clough, centred at SD 913066, is mainly playing fields. The siting, however, suggests that this was a medieval bloomery. (2)
