More information : [SD 85637330] Giant's Grave.[TI]. Giant's Grave, a scheduled round barrow (2), consists of a much disturbed large mound. Excavation by W. Bennett in 1936 uncovered Flag-built burial chambers, the general arrangement of which, and the shape of the mound, suggesting a late Neolithic date. Also found were secondary burials of possibly Iron Age date.(3-4) (Plan AO/55/137/4 from 3) Surveyed at 1:2500. A badly mutilated, and denuded cairn, now turf covered, at SD 85647335. The remains of two cists (AO/55/137/4) are in situ.(5) No change since report of 13.5.64. See annotated AM. No information was gained regarding the present location of the excavated finds, and the 'Iron Age' classification for the secondaries appears dubious. Similarly no information was gained in relation to the excavations "about 1800" noted on the plan of authority 3. 1:2500 survey transformed to 1:10 000 MSD.(6) Secondary burials listed by Challis and Harding as possibly of first millennium BC.(7) Additional references (8-11) Plan (10)
