Grid Ref : SD8995079370

At Yockenthwaite is a fine Bronze Age stone circle 25ft.in
diameter and comprised of 20 stones.(2-4)
(F/55/49/3 from 3.)

Surveyed at 1/2500. A probable cairn circle, consisting of
closely set, limestone boulders, some in contact.
See enlarged sketch and G.P.AO 64/99/1. (5)

No change since report of 12 5 64.

The enclosed area is level - the impression of a slight mound on
the GP being illusionary. (6)

SD 8997 7937. Yockenthwaite small stone circle. Scheduled RSM No
24467. In an excellent state of preservation. Set on a slight bank
alongside the River Wharfe at the foot of the steep slopes of
Yockenthwaite Moor, it is visible from a wide expanse of the adjacent
fellside. The circle of limestone boulders is set on a slight bank,
1.8m wide, itself containing stones. Within the circle is a slight
bowl shaped depression. Internally the circle has a diameter of 7.1m
by 6.5m, making it very close to a true circle. There are 24
boulders, four of which form an outer kerb in the NW quadrant. Three
other stones seem to have fallen and may originally have been part of
the outer kerb. Two small gaps occur, one in the NE quadrant and one
in the SE quadrant, which are likely to have accommodated 3 or 4 more
stones.

The stones stand to an approximate height of 0.4m, the notable
exception being a very large boulder in the SW quadrant with
dimensions of 1.16m by 0.75m by 0.4m. Beyond the circle itself is a
possible outlier stone 6.5m from the perimeter to the SE. To the W,
and roughly in line, are 2 more similar boulders, the first about
62m from the outlier and the second about 107m from it. These are not
included in the Scheduled area as they have yet to be confirmed as
true outliers of the stone circle. (7)
