Parley Barrow

Summary : The scheduled monument includes Parley Barrow, a bowl barrow on the corner of Ellesfield Drive and Druid's Close, one of a dispersed group of barrows on the former heathland on Parley Common. The barrow has a mound, 32 metres in diameter and 2.5 metres high, surrounded by a quarry ditch, from which material was excavated during its construction. This has become infilled over the years but survives as a buried feature circa 3 metres wide. A second barrow circa 45 metres to the south east was destroyed over 25 years ago prior to the construction of the housing estate and is not included in the scheduling. Scheduled.

`A' - Diameter ? 25 paces; height ? 8ft. Ditched.

`B' - Listed under bowl barrows. (2)

`A': A bowl barrow, diameter 27.0m., height 2.5m. with a surrounding
ditch 3.0m. wide and 0.3m. deep. A small old gravel pit has
encroached upon the extremity of the ditch on the south-south-east.

`B': A bowl barrow, diameter 10.0m., height 0.4m. with no visible
ditch. Both barrows are heather covered, and situated in the
gardens of a private house. (3)

Parley Barrow is stil so-called locally but is islanded within an
area of new housing. The mound is as described in 1955,but the
ditch has been encroached upon and destroyed.

The bowl barrow published at SZ 07929863 on the OS 25" 1959
has been destroyed and is in a levelled building plot.
