Summary : A Bronze Age barrow, possibly a bowl barrow, on Grimstone Down. It is part of a barrow cemetery comprising eight barrows and survives as an earthwork up to 0.4 metres high, surrounded by a ditch 2 metres wide by 0.2 metres deep. The barrow is listed as Barrow Number 15b by RCHME (1952) and as Barrow H by the Ordnance Survey. It was not recorded by Grinsell (1959). |
More information : (Centred SY 645955) Tumuli (NR) (twice) Tumulus (NR (Seven mounds shown). 1) One of a group of round barrows on Grimstone Down:- Barrow 'H' - SY 64619560. A bowl barrow, 36 feet in diameter and 1 1/2 feet high, much disturbed in centre (RCHM No 15b; not listed by Grinsell) . (Sited from settlement plan with SY 69 NW 38). (2-3) Barrow 'H' - SY 64619560 is rough rectangular earthwork of unknown purpose and date with sides 6 metres long formed by a bank 2 metres wide with an outer height of 0.4 metres and an inner height of 0.2 metres. The bank is surrounded on the south and west sides by a ditch 2 metres wide by 0.2 metres deep. The enclosed area is slightly raised above the surrounding side with no visible entrance. (4)
Barrow H': As described by Authority (4) save that the raised interior has a surrounding bank (see plan and ground photograph). Probably a barrow but of unusual type. It is doubtful if it has been robbed.
