More information : [A=SD 89153409 and B=89163411] Tumuli [OE] Urn of Bronze Pin found A.D. 1886. (1) 'There are two circular tumuli on Beadle Hill, but they have almost disappeared in course of cultivation. They have been composed as usual of loose stones mixed with earth, and have not measured more than thirty feet in diameter when perfect.' (2) (SD 8833) Briercliffe-cum-Entwhistle, near Burnley. Pre Roman earth circle, near Twist Castle, partly explored, and a food vessel found intact 1889. (3) '(8) Tumulus (earth circle) twenty-seven feet in diameter well defined. Partly explored, and a food vessel found intact in 1889 by Mr. Wilkinson. This is ... in the possession of Mr. H. Mossman [of Halifax]' (4) Nothing remains of these tumuli. (5) Similar information as T.1; '...the remains of tumuli situated about 12 chains west of Sweet Well House. Urn and bronze pin found in one of these A.D. 1886'. (6) It is probable that Mr. Wilkinson was in error in authorising for publication (see T.4) the bronze pin and urn, as he gives a much more precise account of these objects as found at Lancs. 57 SW 2, [Site C]. This error was probably due to the lapse of thirteen years between their discovery and the compilation of the object name book. [See SD 57 SW 2; Urn & Bronze Pin found 1886] (7) Tumulus at A no longer extant; depression at B. (8)
