Bridport Whitefriars

Hob Uid: 450169
Location :
Dorset
Bridport
Grid Ref : SY4600092000
Summary : Carmelite friary alleged to have been founded at Bridport in 1261. Probably ceased to exist by 1365 when an attempt to re-establish it proved unsuccessful.
More information : A Carmelite friary is said to have been founded at
Bridport (SY 4692) in 1261. Carmelite friars were mentioned
there circa 1266 when Cardinal Ottoboni asked the Bishop of
Salisbury to allow them to use their oratory (probably Saint
Andrew's chapel, SY 49 SE 23) without hindrances.

They were given a gift of three oaks from the royal forest in
1268, and in 1268 or 1269 received a legacy from Christina de
Strikelane. The religious house, if such there was, must have
ceased to exist by 1365 when Sir John Chideock was refused a
licence to confer upon the Carmelite order a mill and land at
Bridport for the establishment (or re-establishment) of a
friary. (1-3)
