Monument Number 449574

Hob Uid: 449574
Location :
Devon
East Devon
Axminster
Grid Ref : SY2900098000
Summary : A monastic community was established at Axminster by 757 when the atheling, Cyneheard, was buried in the minster. King Aethelstan founded a secular college there circa 936. Circa 1060, King Edward placed the minster under York, where it remained until at least 1535. The site of the monastery is unknown, although the later collegiate and parish church (SY29NE45), probably marks its site. There is no record of it continuing as a secular college into the Mediaeval period.
More information : The establishment of a new see at Sherborne in 705
resulted in the establishment to of a monastic community at
Axminster, probably during the episcopate of Aldhelm, first
bishop of Sherborne (d.709), or that of his immediate successor
Forthhere. (1)
