Moridunum

Hob Uid: 449521
Location :
Devon
East Devon
Seaton
Grid Ref : SY2400089000
Summary : Seaton is one of the suggested locations of the Roman town of Moridunum listed in the Ravenna Itinerary, with one source suggesting it had been lost to coastal erosion. It is likely, however, that this is probably just conjecture.
More information : Seaton was suggested by Camden to be the site of Moridunum of the Antonine Itinerary, and Stukeley further suggested that the Roman town had been lost by coast erosion. An alternative local siting has been suggested at Honey Ditches (see SY 29 SW 17). However, Rivet considered the Seaton identification to be incorrect, it being more than the Itinerary's 15 miles from Exeter, also on evidence derived from the Ravenna Cosmography and the Peutinger Table.
