A fraternity of Augustinian monks is said to have once existed near Sidmouth (SY 1287), and there are still the remains of a building which tradition affirms to have been a chapel of ease at the period when Sidmouth belonged to the parish of Otterton. (1)

No Augustinian house at Sidmouth is mentioned. (2)

The religious house at Sidmouth mentioned by Lewis was probably the alien priory of Benedictines (SY 18 NW 19) the remains of whose chapel still exist. The house was subordinate to their priory at Otterton (SY 08 NE 17). (3)
