Summary : An 18th century water-powered corn mill, rebuilt in 1854 and restored in 1977 as a museum. It was built on the site of a monastic mill, the surrounding earthwork remains may be Medieval.
More information : (SY 07988524) Otterton Mill (Corn) (NAT) (1) The Old Mill, Otterton. This old mill was in use until five years ago but unless action is taken quickly the machinery will be removed. There has been a mill on this site since 1070. (2) Otterton Mill was the manor mill for Otterton Priory (SY 08 NE 17) from the 12th century until 1450 when it was granted to Syon Abbey. The mill leat is probably the original one but the building was extended and largely rebuilt in 1854. In 1977 the mill and its two breast-shot water wheels were fully restored to working condition and it is now open to the public. (3-4) Otterton Mill, working corn mill & museum - C18th.
