Summary : A Roman legionary fortress was established at Exeter sometime between AD 55 and AD 60, occupying an easily defensible spur overlooking the River Exe. The fortress, which was occupied by the Second Augustan Legion, was exceptionally small (15.4 hectares), perhaps because of the topographical limitations of the site. It continued in existence until the Second Legion moved to Caerleon about 75 AD, when the site came under the jurisdiction of the civilian authorities and formed, circa 80 AD, the basis of the early Roman town. |
