More information : [SX 94478781]. The Vicarage house stands on the site of an old monastery, & till within the last 10 years a Gothic arch, its last remains. stood in the garden. It has been removed. & although some some of the old masonry can still be traced in the walls. there is little beyond this record to point out where the monastery which gave its name to Exminster stood. There is, however, an old building at therear of the vicarage which is believed to have been the granary of the monks. (1) One of two 'minsters' in Devon - the other being Axminster. Probably a collegiate church founded shortly after the setting up of diocese at Sherborne in 705, perhaps a central church was set up with a community of Clergy serving a wide area. (2) There are no remains of the Saxon monastery, which is alleged to have been visited by St Boniface. (a) No further information was obtained during investigation of the area. The alleged granary (T.1) is treated on SX 98 NW 5. (3)
