Summary : The site of a probable Roman signal station, seen as cropmarks. It was observed from the air on a hilltop overlooking Exeter. An inner sub-square enclosure of 32 metres by 34 metres was surrounded by a continuous ditch circa 90 metres in diameter. A rapid examination of air photography shows this probable Roman signal station, visible as cropmarks of a regular square enclosure, with rounded corners and a west-southwest-facing entrance, within a second regular rectilinear enclosure (which has no visible entrance).
More information : (SX 88568888) Faint ?soilmark. White outside, dark within. (From sketch feature appears oval, measures approximately 50 by 28 metres and is aligned east-west.) (1)

The area indicated, a crest position of a south facing slope, is currently under stubble. There is no evidence of an earthwork on the ground.(2)

Ide (SX 885889): a probable signal station resembling that at Stoke Hill was observed from the air on a hilltop overlooking Exeter. An inner sub-square enclosure of 32 by 34m was surrounded by a continuous ditch c 90m in diameter. (3)

SX 8859 8892 (FCE) A rapid examination of air photography (4a) shows this probable Roman signal station, visible as cropmarks of a regular square enclosure, with rounded corners and a west-southwest-facing entrance, within a second regular rectilinear enclosure (which has no visible entrance). (4)
