Summary : Site of a Medieval town gate, no longer extant.
More information : SITE OF SOUTH OR SHAMBLES GATE. "Here opposite the market is the site of the South or Shambles Gate". (1) SOUTH OR SHAMBLES GATE (G.T.) (SITE OF). (2) A broad passage-way leading in the yard of the former Market House Inn now occupies the site of the old South Gate. Although this entrance is obviously old I do not think it contains any remains of the old gate. (3)
