More information : (SX 80276043) East Gate (NR) (Site of) (NAT). (1) The East Gate was probably altered and refronted about 1835 in gothic style when the former round-arched entrance and footway was replaced by a wide, flat-arched gate-way. There are two storeys above the archway. The east front is stuccoed with a coved cornice and crenellated parapet; the west front is also stuccoed with a coved cornice, and a crenellated parapet with a clock below. (2) The East Gate was rebuilt in Medieval times and much altered afterwards. There were originally two archways, a large one spanning the roadway for horses and a small one for pedestrians. (3) The gate has obviously been remodelled a good deal and it is dificult to judge how much of the original gate survives. The archway is in Perpendicular style and is about 4 metres above the road surface. The building over the gate might possibly be as old as the 18th century but this is not certain. (4)
