More information : [SX 81915159] The Beacon [T.I.]. (1) A fire beacon listed as one of the beacons of Devon, and by inference Elizabethan is situated in the park at Oldstone [see 127 SW4] at the junction of the roads to Blackawton and Strete. Russell gives the co-ords SX 818517 to this Beacon. The mound is 15 ft. high and very steeply built except on the seaward side where the slope is long and slight. "Possibly this is the barrow beacon noted by Camden." (2) The mound is 4.0 m. high, 19.0 m. in diameter from E. to W., and 28.0 m. in diameter from N. to S., including ramp on the southern side. Although it occupies a prominent position the view to the the east is restricted by higher ground. While this may be a beacon mound there is a strong possibility that it was part of the 18th c. landscaping associated with the mansion at Oldstones, a short distance to the N.W. (3)
SX 8191 5159 A prominent teardrop-shaped earthen mound with a conical steep sided N end and a long, ramped walkway approach from the S. The top is narrow. Dimensions as given by source (3).
It lies in a field called "Mount Field" in the mid 19th century and the present plantation is "Mountfield Plantation", strongly suggesting its use as a prospect mound for Oldstone. Whether or not it was also a beacon site is open to discussion; Russell cites no evidence (2). (4) |
