Old Lower Bridge

Summary : A packhorse bridge over the River Hodder which was erected in 1562 on the supposed site of an earlier bridge of circa 1329 date known from documentary sources. The current bridge is constructed from sandstone ashlar and is comprised of three segmental arches, with the middle arch being wider. It is approximately 2.1 metres wide withou parapets or rails.

The Lower Bridge over the R. Hodder, on the road from Mitton to Stonyhurst. The old bridge was erected in 1561 by Sir Richard Sherburn. There would appear to have been an earlier bridge, probably of wood, spoken of in a document (a.) dated 1329. (2)

Alongside the Lower Hodder Bridge is a disused bridge which has three segmental arches spanning a distance of about 42 yards. This bridge has no parapets or rails, and is approximately 7 feet in width. (3)

Aighton, Bailey and Chaigley, the Old Lower Hodder Bridge' - Scheduled. (4)

The Old Lower Hodder Bridge is correctly described. No trace of any earlier structure can be seen. Although in a reasonable state of preservation the bridge is closed. GP.AO.61.241.7.shows the N.E.aspect. (5)
