Summary : Bronze Age bowl barrow surviving as an earthwork. Suggested glacial mound - excavation in 1894 found no archaeological remains - but considered to form a pair with SD 73 NW 3.
More information : [SD 7085 3730] Tumulus [OE] (1) Excavated on 25th September 1894, proved to be of glacial origin. (2) This mound is undoubtedly of glacial origin. (3) SD 7084 3730. Bowl barrow 170m NE of Hacking Boat House. Scheduled RSM No 23712. A bowl barrow located on the flood plain of the River Ribble, comprising an oval earthen mound up to 6m high with max dimensions of 44m NNW-SSE x 35m SSW-NNE. Limited antiquarian investigation on part of the monument's summit in 1894 failed to locate any archaeological deposits. Similar excavations on another simlar mound to the N of this example (SD 73 NW 3) did, however, locate burial remains. It is considered that the works on this site simply missed or failed to identify the archaeological remains. (4)
