DESCRIPTION

Inscribed stone, 6th-8th century, recut as a cross in the 9th-11th centuries, and utilized as a direction post. It bears Chi-Rho monogram contemporary with its original use, and a faint inscription... PRINCIP IVRIVCI AVDETI (Use of cunic P N and R) contemporary with its cutting as a cross.

(SX 54739178) Stone Cross (NR) (remains of)(NAT) (1)

The cross stands in a recently formed recess in the hedge. It is
tall and of rough rectangular section with small short arms (type A
(2)). The head above the arms expands slightly upwards. The shaft bears an illegible inscription cut lengthwise in three lines, hence it has been suggested that the stone was originally a sepulchral or memorial stone which has been re-cut into a cross.

Incised letters (one on each face) H. T. O and h, for Hatherleigh,
Tavistock etc indicate its subsequent use as a direction post.

The cross on Sowton Down was originally a 5th/6th century
memorial stone. It bears a faint inscription... PRINCIP
IVRIVCI AVDETI?(Use of cunic p n and R)(3). Illustration (a). (2,3)

The cross is 2.1m high and its stubby arms project 0.05m from
the sides of the shaft. (4)

Wayside cross. Grade II. (7)

Information as above. It was placed in its present position in 1993 (SX54589159) after completion of the Okehampton bypass. The stone is the pilar type dating from the 5th-11th centuries. The recutting as a cross dates from the 9th-11th centuries. The inscrition is probably contemporary with the recutting, but the Chi Rho monogram is earlier, probably of the 6th-8th centuries. (8)
