Monument Number 43963

Hob Uid: 43963
Location :
Lancashire
Lancaster
Burrow-with-Burrow
Grid Ref : SD6100075000
Summary : A Roman inscribed altar was found built into an old wall in the neighbourhood of Burrow before c 1746.
More information : Rauthmel illustrates an inscribed altar which he found, built up into
an old wall, in the neighbourhood of Burrow. It subsequently came
into his possession, but is now unfortunately lost.
Various readings and expansions of this inscription have been
proposed, but the latest and best is that of Professor Hubner,
of Berlin, who expands it as "DEO SAN(CTO) CONTREBI V(ALERIUS)
ATTA POSU(IT)." He considers the word "CONTREBI" to be derived
from the Hispano-Roman town named "CONTREBIA." (1)

This altar is probably to be found in Rauthmel's own district
of Bowland, as it was in his possession when he wrote his
book in 1746. (2)
