More information : SX 57406003: a barrow with a deeply hollowed centre. (1) At SX 57406004 on Crownhill Down is a barrow 19m. in diameter and 1.0m. high with a robbed centre. A shepherd's hut stood on its south-west flank from 1832 to 1901 but no trace of it remains. (2) At SX 57406004, on the broad ridge of Crownhill Down is a bell barrow. It has overall diameters of 26m. E to W and 24.5m N to S and is 1.1m high. The SE side has been sliced back; this and an off-centre excavation hollow, 7.0m. across and 0.7m. deep,form major mutilations Nevertheless there is a distinct berm from 1.5m. to 2.3m. wide around two thirds of the perimeter, between 0.1m. and 0.2m. high (see plan). There is no surrounding ditch. The barrow is not listed by Grinsell. Surveyed at 1:2500 on MSD and at 1:500. (3-4)
A round barrow, now extensively disturbed and mutilated has been previously identified as a bell barrow. It lies in open moorland and it has been heavily cut by a track on its SE side. The fringe of the mound is indistinct and damaged in places. The earthen mound is about 24m across and a maximum 1.6 m high - which includes spoil from an 0.7m deep pit in its top. Little surface stone is visible. (5) |
