More information : Two hut circles on Crownhill Down, both have walls containing large stones. They are associated with ancient fields. a. SX 575605. 18 feet in diameter. Scheduled No. 760 b. SX 574606. 24 feet in diameter. Found by Aileen Fox. (1) Scheduled number given above has been omitted from the published list of Ancient Monuments. (2-3) There are five hut circles and one hut platform within a perhistoric field system (SX 56 SE 22): A: SX 57326062. A hut circle levelled into the slope. B: SX 57386057. Hut Circle. C: SX 57386077. Hut circle with earthen bank 8m. in diameter and 0.2m. high. D: SX 57416074. The elliptical hut platform measures 7m. by 6m. and is cut into the hill slope. It contains a few stones on its east while a small wall runs along its north side. E: SX 57566049. A Hut circle 12m. by 9m. with internal division and bank of earth and boulders. F: SX 57586057: A hut circle defined by ten boulders and an intermittent bank measures 10m. in diameter and 0.5m. high with a flat grassy interior. The last two hut circles have small associated field systems to their east. (4) A; SX 57326070. A circular hut platform 5.5m. in diameter cut 0.4m. deep into the hillslope on the E. side and built up correspondingly on the W. There are three stones on the perimeter. (The hut type is uncertain). B: Not found. C: SX 57376077. A circular platform 6.9m. in diameter, levelled into a W slope, and of uncertain type. There is a bank 1.6m. wide and 0.2m. high on the perimeter in the western half. D. Not found, but there is a possible hut of uncertain type at SX 57356080. It has an internal diameter of approximately 3.5m. with four blocks of stone on the perimeter. A narrow field, 6m. wide and 21m. long, extends westward of the hut, bounded by a line of single small stones. E: SX 57556047. A much robbed hut of type 2 with an internal diameter of 6.0m. and a short arc of double-faced walling 1.6m. wide and 0.6m. high. Adjoining the S side is an annexe or possibly another hut with an internal diameter of 5.2m. E to W and 4.1m. N to S. Five single stones are spaced round the perimeter. (See ground photograph). F: SX 57556055. A type 2 hut with most of its double walling removed. It has an internal diameter of 7.6m. the surviving walling being 1.6m. wide and 0.6m. high. (see ground photograph). Surveyed at 1;2500 on MSD. (5)
A scattered group of hut circles centred at SX 57496074 are situated on the moderately steep N and NW-facing slopes of Crownhill Down. They are probably associated with the rectilinear field system SX 56 SE 122. Much of the area is covered by dense mature gorse and swathes of bracken hence some of the huts are now difficult to trace.
Huts A & B were not located in dense gorse vegetation.
SX 57406075 A well defined hut levelled into the hillslope and now partialy hidden by mature gorse. The oval shaped interior measures some 7.8m by 5.9m with an 0.5m high backscarp and an 0.4m high frontscarp. The turf-covered stony bank is 0.4m high; there is no trace of an entrance gap but the hut was probably approached from the N or S sides, along the slope.
An adjacent amorphous mound at SX57366079 which is a maximum 4.2m by 3.5m and 0.4m high may be a small clearance mound.
SX 57406074 A hut stance levelled into the slope with an 0.7m high backscarp and an 0.3n high frontscarp. The level interior measures 6.0m by 4.6m with a slight stony bank along the lip of the front scarp. There is no obvious entrance.
SX 57556048. The denuded remains of what appears to be one substantial hut with and annexe or possibly two conjoined, extensively robbed hut circles. Located on a high point the site is associated with adjacent and fragmentary field walls. The northern circle partially comprises a double-faced wall up to 2.8m wide and 0.6m high. The remainder of the circuit is defined by a number of large boulders; the interior is very approximately 8m across. The southern part is defined by scattered large boulders which form a ragged circuit some 7.0m by 5.6m internally. The largest boulder measures 1.2m by 1.0m and 0.7m high and the adjacent boulders are part of a robbed field bank. ( Scheduled) SX57556056. The robbed remains of a hut circle with an internal diameter of 7m enclosed by a fragmentary stone and earth bank 1.1m wide and 0.5m high on the north side. The position of the entrance is not clear. Adjacent to this hut are two probable hut stances. SX57586056 is 6m across and cut into the slight slope with an 0.4m high scarp on the downhill side. SX57556054 a level stance approximately 7m across. These sites are covered by bracken. SX57506074. The remains of a large hut circle within a field plot. It has a level interior and measures approximately 15m across. The wall is on average 0.2m high with some inner and outer facing slabs and a few large stones. The position of the entrance is not clear. (6)
