More information : (SX 33248454) The South Gate; 14th century gateway of old town wall. Three storeys with an embattled parapet of possible later date. A narrow way through short remnant of wall on west side, has remains of arch dated 1653. Grade 1. (1) See photograph. (2) The South Gate was also the town prison, being still used as such circa 1842. (3) South Gate is as described and in good condition. It is now used as a shop. Revised at 1:2500 on MSD. (4)
Town gate. C14, slightly remodelled C17, pedestrian gate added 1887. Dressed volcanic agglomerate stone and greenstone to lower half, otherwise slatestone rubble with volcanic agglomerate dressings plus C17 granite dressings; pyramidal rag slate roof behind late C19 embattled parapet; stone stack over left hand (west) wall removed C20; two square rooms over main gateway approached by stone staircase bridging smaller gateway. 3 storeys.
