Summary : The Lancashire Union Railway was authorised in 1863 to create a line from St Helens to Springs Branch Junction at Wigan using the North Union line to Boars Head and thence to Addington. From Adlington it would utilise the LYR line to Chorley, then create a new line to Cherry Tree, and so reach Blackburn. The line opened in 1869. The section between Chorley and Cherry Tree, and Adlington - Boars Head closed in 1960.
