More information : [SX 2516 7127] Tumulus (NR) (1) A cairn up to 16.5 metres in diameter and 1.9 metres high. The centre and east side have been disturbed (possibly by excavation, see SX 27 SE 12) and there is a spread of spoil on the west side.
Published survey 1:2500 revised.
Miss D Dudley's record 6" sheet shows a possible feature, at SX 2512 7127 but there is nothing on the ground. (2) Mutilated in centre and east side. Bank surrounds barrow. (3) Depicted on NMR Bodmin Moor Survey AP transcription. (4) Situated on level ground towards the crest of a weak southerly spur and at 321 metres above OD in unenclosed moorland. A cairn with an overall diameter of 27.5 metres and a central mound approximately 13 metres in diameter and 2.2 metres high. The centre and west side have been severely damaged by stone robbing and displacement and there is a trench on the south which extends at ground level to the centre. Around the cairn there appears to be a berm, 2 metres to 3 metres wide, of which only the north part is slightly above ground level (and this impression may result from peat digging over the surrounding area). The outer edge of the berm is demarcated by a circumferential series of turf covered mounds of stone, 2 metres to 3 metres across and about 0.6 metres high. They vary from the contiguous to intervals of 2 metres to 3 metres. It is possible that they are the relics of early rummaging. They are less likely to be of the period of major excavtion since in this there is no turf or growth on the stones. On the west side spoil is piled across the berm and any bank which existed.
The cairn looks as if it originally consisted of a central mound, berm and outer bank but damage has resulted in a rather nebulous cairn which is unlikely to produce an interpretation even if surveyed at large scale.
At SX 2513 7126 about 12 metres to the west of the large cairn, there are traces of another, 11 metres in diameter and 0.2 metres to 0.4 metres high. It has been thoroughly robbed, and while stone is exposed around the east side the rest is covered with turf and gorse.
There is no evidence of a kerb or any formal structure. In fair condition, large but considerably damaged by past robbing and excavation.
Surveyed at 1:2500. (5)
