Summary : Medieval settlement and enclosure at Treworld. Excavations identified two phases of occupation, the first was dated to the 9th-12th century and comprised buildings of turf construction situated within the enclosure. The second phase was 13th century and comprised stone built longhouses. The settlement is visible on aerial photographs but field investigations in 1976 located no traces. |
More information : Thirteenth century and earlier ccupation site at Treworld (SX 12379014) excavated in 1963. (1) Period 1. Thirteen phases of superimposed turf buildings represented by stake holes and narrow 'U' shaped trenches. All within an earlier enclosure; of which only 20 feet of the west side remains. No dating finds made but a 9th to 12th century pe riod of occupation is suggested. Period 2. Two 13th century stone wall long houses immediately overlaying Period 1 structures. Thirteenth century pottery found. A section across a banked circular enclosure close by (SX 12369016) revealed three 13th century sherds and a whetstone. The enclosure is used as an animal shelter "as it no doubt was in mediaeval times". Clearly visible on AP's. (2) The settlement and circular enclosure, situated on a fairly steep north facing slope, have been completely effaced. The area is regularly ploughed. (3)
