Smithill's Hall consists of three ranges (E, N & W) of an open
court, the position of the gatehouse implies that there was
also a south range. The oldest part is the great hall in the north
range, which is ascribed to the early 15th century. In 1590 the
west range was extended and there were further additions circa 1875. The chapel was rebuilt in 1858. (3)

The north and west sides were formerly protected by a moat. (4)

SD 69961188 The oldest parts of the Hall are now in the process of being restored by Ministry of Works and will eventually be opened to the Public. Mr France, Ranger of Bolton Corporation, of Smithhill's Cottage, confirmed the name as Smithill's Hall. 95)

A good example of the period, now renovated and open to the public. No trace of a moat survives. (6)
