Summary : Mid to late 15th century house, fortified soon after 1457. The present house is mainly early 16th century in date, extensively restored 1817-45. The east front dates from 1791. The south front is broken by two early 16th century bay windows and has a tower at the west end. This replaced an earlier tower which collapsed in the 18th century.

Place House, which came into the possession of the Treffry family in the time of Richard I, was defended against the French in 1457, and was largely rebuilt and fortified soon afterwards. The present mansion is mainly early 16th century extensively restored by Joseph Thomas Treffry circa 1817-1845. The east front dates from 1791, and the large west tower replaces the tower mentioned by Leland which collapsed in the 18th century. (2-5)
