A motte and bailey castle is at Bossiney. In 1086 it belonged to Count Robert of Mortain. (2)
A strong ringwork which formerly had a bailey Plan. (3-5)
Bossiney Castle, is still in existence. In 1852 it is described as a circular bank and ditch enclosing a raised area 100 ft in diameter with, on the W side, an area 100 ft square formed by an outwork with rounded corners. (6)
Bossiney Castle (name verified), is a sub-circular ringwork. No bailey can be identified on the ground, if there ever was one, for the early plan is grossly inaccurate. The ringwork is up to 46.0 m in diameter and encloses a slightly raised triangular-shaped area of 16.0 m by 14.0 m, with an entrance gap on the E. The north side of the rampart is particularly strong being up to 5.9 m high externally with a 20.0 m wide and 0.9 m deep outer ditch. No ditch exists on the E or S sides of the ringwork but these areas have been 'landscaped'. Surveyed at 1:2500 on PFD. (7)
