More information : (SD 53527407) Up Hall (NAT) (1) "The ancient mansion of Up Hall has been taken down and a new erection on another site, has received the name. Near the old site a moat was visible within memory". (2) The present Up Hall is a two-storeyed, L-shaped building of the 18th century, probably incorporating the core of the original house (? 17th century). Grade 2. (3) Slight traces of a possible ditched enclosure? are visible at SD 53657410, just east of the present Upp Hall. (4)
Investigation of the site revealed a large irregularly-shaped platform, encompassed by a shallow, flat-bottomed ditch adjacent to a natural spring. The ditch has been partially back filled with farm waste. Survey by the West Lancs Archaeol Soc. (5)

Earthworks of the medieval moated site and fishponds were mapped as part of the National Mapping Program, during the National Archaeological Identification Survey: Upland Pilot. The mapping revealed the same layout as Authority 5 above, with the addition of an earthwork bank running across the centre of the moated site, located at SD 5364 7410, which may be evidence of internal structures or buildings.
