More information : Slightly to the W and below the broad flat top of Trelow Downs, at about 575 ft OD; there is a N to S alignment of four stones, extending over 250m. The northern stone is at SW 92906814 with intervals of 92.0m, 52.0m and 64.0m to the southern stone at SW 92906794. The stones incorporate bands of spar and are of 'post' type, 0.1m to 0.2m in diameter, and from 0.4m to 0.6m high. To the S the setting is aligned on a bowl barrow (SW 96 NW 3). Another barrow, a bell (SW 96 NW 27), is on line between the penultimate and the northern stone, ie it interrupts the visual alignment. There seems no reason to assume a prehistoric or any early origin for the alignment since it may be a post medieval mark out for a newtake which was never completed, but it is an unusual feature. (See illustration). Stones positioned on 1:2500 on Antiquity Model for AO records. (1) |
