An inscribed Roman cylindrical milestone with rectangular base,
9ft 1ins total height, was found in 1803 in the bed of Artle Beck,
near Caton, 4 miles east north-east of Lancaster. The inscription
reads: Imp (eratori) Caes (ari)/Tr (aiano)
Hadriano/Aug(usto)p(ontifici)m (aximo)t(ribuniciae)
p(otestatis)/co(n)s(uli)III p(atri) p(atriae)/L(...)
m(ilia)p(assuum)IIII.

'For the Emperor Caesar Trajan Hadrian Augustus, pontifex maximus,
with tribunician power, thrice consul, father of his country,
from L(...) 4 miles'. (2)
