Summary : Great house built in 1385 and mostly rebuilt in 1571 by Sir John Killigrew, the first Governor of Pendennis Castle, in 1646 the house was partly destroyed by fire during the siege of Pendennis Castle, though it was rebuilt after the war. The house was extended after 1786, it was neglected during the 1970s and suffered a fire at the manor end, the building was repaired in 1978 and has since been converted into flats and a house. Built of Killas rubble with granite dressings and scantle slate roofs.The building was originally E-shaped in plan with a wing to the far left. |
More information : (SW 81213232) Arwenack House (Remains of)(NAT) Manor House (NR) (1) (SW 81213232) Arwenack House (NAT) (SW 81233231) Arwenack Manor (NAT) (2) Arwenack House was the manor of the Killigrews, but only part of the large Elizabethan house remains. The original house was 14th century but this was rebuilt in the 16th century. The chapel and hall were destroyed during the Civil War and additions were made after 1786. The present house is of rubble with slate roofs with remains of the 16th century building at the rear consisting of large stone mullion openings and semi-octagonal bay window with three-centred arch doorway and label mould over. The rebuilt Arwenack Manor House, probably part of the original outbuilding,is connected to Arwenack House by a short wall about 12ft high. (3-4)
