Grid Ref : SW8460039000 |
Summary : A circular enclosure comprising a ditch with outer bank, and measuring over 33 metres in total diameter, was cleared and bulldozed by 1968. Ordnance Survey field investigation in that year noted "very slight indications of a curving bank", but could not confirm that these were surviving earthworks rather than a natural feature. The site has been suggested as a possible henge, though this is generally considered unlikely and a range of alternatives are equally possible. |
More information : (SW 847390)A possible henge consisting of a circular ditch c.90 ft. in diameter with outer bank c.110 ft diameter. There is some trace of a possible inner bank. Situated in OS. Field No. 99. Visible on Air Survey, "Cornwall, 4097". (1) Bousfield's remarks probably apply to the area of scrub shown on OS 25" at SW 84533916. This has now been cleared and bulldozed. There are very slight indications of a curving bank but it is not clear whether this is an antiquity or a natural rise. (2)
Possible henge site, could be a simple ring ditch, included in Gazeteer and distribution map of Neolithic sites in Cornwall. (3)
Listed by Harding and Lee as an unlikely henge. (4)
No visible remains were found during MPPA survey in 1999. (5) |
