More information : (SW 77495257) St Piran's Well (NR) (site of) (NAT) (1) Called "a fair arched well" by Tonkin, St. Piran's Well fell into disuse after a mine opened near the well, destroyed its spring. The majority of the scattered stones of the building have been reconstructed over a spring at SW 79755122, in the grounds of Chyverton. (2-3) [This grid reference is not correct, the spring (1435668) is at SW79745125] There is no local knowledge of the actual site of the well though the OS siting is accepted locally as probably being in about the right place. The reconstructed remains at Chyverton are Medieval, certainly not earlier. (4) St. Piran's Well was considered a healing well, particularly for rickets. The well building "was being destroyed by the Goths of the district" about 1864 and the arch rescued by Mr. Peters of Chiverton. (See SW 75 SE 16). In its original condition the porch entrance was large enough for three or four people to sit down in. (5-6)
