Summary : Site of a disused tin mine. It was certainly in use during the late 18th and early 19th centuries although no records exist. It was again in operation from 1858 and was certainly producing tin in 1874. An abortive attempt to re-open the mine occurred in 1927. |
More information : (SW 767558) Wheal Vlow (Tin, Disused) (NAT) (1) Wheal Vlow was a small but ancient tin mine whose workings were drained by adits half a mile in length from Perran Beach. No records of the 18th century workings exist but it was in operation during the same period as Wheal Creeg at SW 765553 which was working in 1774 and selling tin between 1803 and 1818 (Wheal Creeg is not shown on OS 6" 1888). Between 1858 and 1866 Wheal Vlow was equiped with a 24 ins. cylinder engine and was producing tin in 1874. There was an abhortive attempt to re-open the mine in 1927. (2)
