Gravel Hill Mine

Hob Uid: 428190
Location :
Cornwall
Perranzabuloe
Grid Ref : SW7645357494
Summary : The site of Gravel Hill Ironstone Mine that is located at the northern end of Perran Beach. The site consists of a shaft and earthwork remains of a possible drift. The site is mostly known from documentary sources but the drift area remains visually impressive. John Woodward (1688-1728) wrote that "the vein has been worked formerly, and is vastly large". During the 1860s, ore was drawn up the cliff (where it outcrops) by an 11.5 inch "puffer" engine winding engine, before being transported the three miles to a newly constructed quay on the Gannel. The remains of a dismantled railway built to service the mining operations was in operation from 1849 until 1963 and ran from the south west end of this mine.

At the northern extremity of Perran Beach are the excavations of
the Perran iron lode which outcrops in the cliff. John Woodward
(1688-1728) wrote "the vein has been worked formerly, and is
vastly large".

Gravel Hill Mine stands above the outcrop and during the 1860s
the ore was drawn up the cliff from the seaward workings by an
11 1/2 in "puffer" engine. It was then carted three miles to a
newly constructed quay on the Gannel. (2)
