| Summary : A church built circa 1150 and enlarged in the 15th century. It was abandoned in 1804 due to the encroachment of sand. The tower, pillars, font, woodwork and tracery were removed to the new church located 3 miles away. The foundations remain in situ and the walls survive to a maximum height of 2 metres. However, much is covered by sand, and the exposed parts have suffered damage. A survey of the area around the church in the early 1980s revealed a graveyard enclosure and traces of fields which continue into modern cultivated areas. The size of the enclosure, about 100 metres across, indicates a possible monastic enclosure. |

St Piran's Church, built c 1150 and enlarged in the 15th c. was
abandoned in 1804 due to the encroachment of the sand. The
tower, pillars, font, woodwork and tracery were removed to the
new church about three miles away (SW 77045203). The complete
foundations remain in situ and some stone walls remain to a
considerable height. HHR Grade 2. (2,3)
The church is centred at SW 77205646 and much of its walling
is exposed.
At the east end the walls are well preserved and up to 2.0m.
high incorporating window openings and a small recess for a
piscina.
Most of the walling at the west end is covered by wind-blown
sand; those parts that are exposed have been badly damaged.

A survey around the area of St Piran's old Church revealed a graveyard enclosure and two remains of fields which continue into modern cultivated areas. The size (100 m across) indicate a monastic enclosure. The Domesday Book refers to Lanpiran `a graveyard or monastic enclosure of St Piran' and refers to this enclosure rather than one at the Oratory (SW 75 NE 3). (5,6)
