More information : SD 52242885 St Mary's Priory (NR) (site of) (NAT) (1) Penwortham - Benedictine priory cell, dependent on Evesham. Founded circa 1140, dissolved after 1535. (2) At the Dissolution, the priory was acquired by the Fleetwoods, who made their residence in the buildings. Whitaker describes it as 'a humble edifice three sides of which were still entire, and enclosed by a moat'. He conjectured that the fourth side had been rebuilt in living memory, and contained the chapel. There was a quadrangle about 40ft square, but the structure had been so modified that the disposition of the priory could not be traced. A modern building was erected partly on the site in 1832. (3) No remains, the site is now covered by a recent housing estate. (4) Site of (NAT) St Mary's Priory (NR) (Benedictine) (NAT). (5)
The 1971 edition of "Medieval Religious Houses in England and Wales" by Knowles and Hadcock gives the foundation date of Penwortham Priory as being between 1104 and 1122. (6) |
