More information : (SW 683365) Nine Maidens (NAT) Stone Circle (NR) (1) At the southern end of Nine Maidens Downs are the remains of two stones circles in a field close to two cottages. (See plan). Five stones reamin of the southern circle, which probably had a diameter of 51 ft and consisted of about 14 stones. A sixth stone stood at point 'a' on the plan, was subsequently moved to point 'b' and has now disappeared. Of the northern circle only three stones, all built into hedges, remain, but in 1738 there were 10 (a). It was perhaps 60 ft in diameter. The eight stones vary in height from 3 ft to 5 ft. A barrow stood 20 or 30 yards to the west. Scheduled as Nine Maidens, stone circle. (2,3) SW 68313653. Only four stones now remain in the field. There are several similar stones built into nearby field walls, any or all of which may have been parts of the original circles. There are no traces of the barrow noted by Borlase. Published 1:2500 survey revised. (4)
