Monument Number 425195

Hob Uid: 425195
Location :
Cornwall
St. Ives
Grid Ref : SW5210040900
Summary : Blockhouse, probably built in 1490, demolished around 1866.
More information : Site of the Blockhouse, said to have been built in 1490, which Henderson sited to near Carn Crowze (SW 521409 on Sheppard's plan of St Ives).

It was also known as 'the Castle' and was being maintained when seen by Leland about 1538. There were considerable repairs in 1647 and it is said to have been used as a jail during the 17th century. There was an 'outward gate' whose door was mended in 1715. Just south of the Castle stood 'Castle Battery', one of several Napoleonic fortifications on the Island in 1816 manned by local volunteers.

Matthew states that the Castle was demolished when the 'unfinished' pier, adjacent to Smeaton's pier, was constructed
in 1864 (1) or 1866 (4). (1-4)
