Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 424959

Hob Uid: 424959
Location :
Cornwall
St. Erth
Grid Ref : SW5577034750
Summary : Earthwork remains of an Iron Age or Roman round covering three acres. A flint arrowhead and flakes have been found on the site.
More information : SW 55773477 Castle O.E. (1)

Above the vicarage at St. Erth, there is a 'doubly entrenched circular castle' containing some 2 acres. (2)

Shown as a Univallate Hill-Fort of less than 3 acres. (3)

A spread outer slope 1.0m. high survives on the W. and S. and faint traces are discernible on the S.E. and E. Surveyed at 1/2500. There is no visible evidence that it was ever bivallate as Polwhele suggests and it was accepted as univallate by Thomas in 1851. Its non-defensive situation on a S.W. slope below the hilltop with its shape and size are typical of an I.A. round rather than a hill-fort. (4)

Earthwork(NR) (5)

Listed. (6)

See plan. (7)

A flint arrowhead and flakes found within the round are at Lanuthno Farm. (8)
