More information : A Roman milestone, dedicated to Constantine I, was found, in 1854, built into the 14th c foundations of the chancel of St Hilary's Church. It is now cemented into the floor of the S aisle (SW 55053128), concealing the uninscribed portion, and stands 50 ins high above floor level. (1_ The milestone stands in the church at SW 55033129 against the south wall at the rear of the south aisle. It is 1.3 metres high, 0.5 metres wide at the base and 0.6 metres wide at its top; well preserved, with its inscription clearly visible. (2)
The stone has been dated to 306-308AD. It may originally have marked a coastal route linking Mounts Bay with the Porthleven area. The stone was found in 1854 after the church had been destroyed by fire. As the milestone has been erected inside the church it cannot be scheduled but could be recommended for listing. (3)
