More information : [SW 5565716] Stone [TI] (1) An inscribed stone, probably of early 5th c. date, was found at a depth of c. 4 feet, beside a stone-lined grave `by the side of a private road on Carsnew Point.` The stone measured 6 feet by 1 foot. The grave contained sand, charcoal and ashes. (2) The stone has been replaced by a modern tablet inscribed:- "Here Cenui fell asleep who was born in 500. Here in this tomb he lies. He lived 33 years." Original inscription: "Hic Cenui reovievii cv nat do hic tvmvlo iacit vixit annos xxxiii" (3) The stone was found in 1843 within the possible round at Carnsew (SW 55 NE 15) At its side was a stone lined and covered grave, aligned east-west, containing sand, charcoal and ashes. The slab, which was broken on removal, is set upright in a small park beside the viaduct, but is now illegible. The inscription is read by Radford as "Here in the tomb she rests. Cunaide lies here in the tomb. She lived 33 years", but Thomas considers Jago`s interpretation to be the most accurate, "Here in peace lately went to rest Silvanus, husband of Cunaide. Here in the tomb he lies. He lived 33 years". Scheduled under Crosses and Inscribed Stones. (4-9)
Full description of the stone and discussion of the text, which stylistically dates the stone to the 5th-11th centuries, but it cannot more closely dated. The inscription is now illegible. (10) |
